bk-approved Genre films & Tv I thought this was a special movie. It's deep and thoughtful and human and emotional and it does it all while keeping a foot in the horror world and not having a whole lot of dialog. Excellent stuff. I don't recall loving the podcast this show uses as source material, but man they've made something special here. It's a creepy, weird story that'll grab your attention and keep you hooked 'til the end. I thought this movie was fantastic. Top-notch psychological horror with a near-perfect blend of tension, subtlety, and subtext. Could it be my favorite of the year? Maybe! Mike Flanagan's stuff has kinda been hit or miss for me over the years, but this show was pretty great. And honestly, it's probably worth watching strictly for the incredible performances of Hamish Linklater (Father Paul) & Samantha Sloyan (Bev). There's nothing particularly scary about this movie, but it's exactly the type of artsy weirdness I want from an A24 release. This one might be more sci-fi than anything else, but it *does* have some super rad nightmare imagery. It's a smart, slow burn movie that admittedly makes some questionable plot decisions, but man it's SO CLOSE to being REALLY good. I can't resist a good descent into madness story, and this is one of the best I've seen in a long while. The third act of this thing goes off the rails in the best way. In a genre that's overrun with lots of copycat, trope-y drivel, it's great to watch a film that approaches familiar topics from a unique perspective. Highly recommended. This is an A24 release, which probably gives you an idea of what to expect—a lovely, heartwarming film featuring characters(s) who definitely have a firm grasp on reality. Sator is the slowest of slow-burning films, but if you're into artsy, occulty, mumbly desolation horror, it is 100% the movie for you. This movie fuckin’ rocks. It’s stupid and silly and over the top and so much fun. Oh, and if you appreciate TMNT movie nostalgia, be sure to stick around for the end credits.
